Working principle of pin diode

The types of the photodiodes can be classified based on its construction and functions as follows. The p-type and n-type regions are typically heavily doped because they are used for ohmic contacts. The wide intrinsic region is in contrast to an ordinary p–n diode. A summary of the PIN diode structure explaining how its structure defines its properties.

An overview or tutorial of the basics of the PIN diode , PIN diode technology, their structure, characteristics and applications.

Then the ap- proximate current values for large-current operation and the internal carrier distribution are clearly explained based on this.

The author confirms the validity of this work through device simulations.

The pin (pn–n) diode considered here is a . The resistance value of the PIN diode is determined only by the forward biased dc current. In switch and attenuator applications, the PIN diode should ideally control the RF signal level without introducing distortion . The PIN photo diode operates with an applied reverse bias voltage and when the reverse bias is applie the space charge region must cover the intrinsic region. It consists of built-in lenses, optical filters, and has small or large surface areas.

As suggested in the name, pin, one of the heavily doped regions is p-type material and the other is n-type. Although there are several different types of photodiode , they all utilise the same basic principles , although some are enhanced by other effects. The high electrical field conductivity in the wide depletion layer prompts the carriers to move, . It is also sometimes referred as photo-detector, photo-sensor, or light detector. Photodiodes are specially designed to operate in reverse bias condition.

Working Principle of Photodiode. Photodiode is made of silicon semiconductor material which heave the energy gap 1. This gap is actually between valance band and conduction band and at zero room temperature, the valance band is completely filled with the negative or . In the second illustration when there are lights on the detector, photons with . A P-N junction is the simplest form of the diode which behaves as ideally short circuit when it is in forward biased and behaves as ideally open circuit when it is in the reverse biased. Beside simple PN junction diodes , there are different types of diodes although the fundamental principles are more or less same.

For More Video lectures from IIT Professors. Video Lectures on Electron Devices by Prof. The diodes are classified into different types based on their working principles and characteristics.

These include Generic diode, Schotty diode, Shockley diode, Constant-current diode, Zener diode, Light emitting diode, Photodiode, Tunnel diode, Varactor, Vacuum tube, Laser diode, PIN diode , Peltier diode, Gunn diode, . Fully solid state duplexers based on PIN diodes are becoming an attractive alternative in the context of good isolation, fast recovery time and long life.
