Wiring a 1 gang 2 way switch

They are wired so that operation of either switch will control the light. The common is for the live wire that supplies the input voltage to the switch. Notice the black wire is the only wire that we are controlling through the - way switch. Two way light switch mechanism.

Connect the cables as shown in the wiring diagram.

Wire each circuit to individual switches.

These diagrams show various methods of one , two and multiple way switching.

Switches are shown as dotted rectangles. The diagrams here are all one gang , as there is one switch on each plate. The switches themselves are one way, two way and intermediate.

When the switch is on, both terminals are connected together. Typically, these terminals will be marked COM. Basically, this is just two single way switches . This is where you can control the same light via two . Be cautious when opening up multi- way switches.

The lights they control should take power from the same circuit, but if yours are incorrectly wired and take power from different circuits, there will be live cables at each switch position when one circuit is isolated. There is more than one method of wiring multi- way lights. Dotted lines show alternative switch positions. Two - way switching plus intermediate switching. In building wiring , multiway switching is the interconnection of two or more electrical switches to control an electrical load from more than one location.

While a normal light switch . The intermediate light switch is used where three or more switches control one light and used in conjunction with two two way light switches to achieve this. Three way light switching circuit diagram (old cable colours).
