How to measure inductance with oscilloscope

Quick video on using your oscilloscope and signal generator to determine the vaule of an unknown inductor. This is the practically realized method as per my knowledge. There are many ways to do this, but this video focuses on just two basic techniques.

The video was inspired by this blog post on scopejunction. You can expect capacitance and inductance values with - .

Adjust the frequency of the generator to approximately kHz.

Connect the unknown inductor parallel to the oscilloscope (Fig. ).

This approach may also be adapted for use as an instructional lab exercise. When an LCR meter is not available, there are various methods for measuring inductance using an oscilloscope. Measuring arrangement triangle current Fig. The circuit used for this measurement is shown in figure 2. I also decided to add viewing the resultant ringing oscillation on my RIGOL DSA-815-TG Spectrum Analyzer.

How Inductor works - Duration: 3:00. A simple way to measure capacitance or inductance without an LCR meter. I was wondering whether the ground of the F. Tolerances of the known component value, plus the input capacitance of the . There are several methods which we will discuss in this tutorial article. The first is to place the inductor in series with . Turn on the oscilloscope and clamp the two clips of one voltmeter to the circuit on opposite sides of the coil to determine the voltage drop across the coil.

Then do the same for the resistor with another voltmeter. Set the frequency of the oscilloscope such that the voltage drop across the resistor and inductor . Start at very low frequency, and the voltage at the test . Put an ohmic resistor in series with inductor and measure the tension over the resistor. Circuit measures capacitance or inductance figure 1. Use the setup to measure the magnitude of two signals. The impedance measuring technique used in this lab uses two voltage waveforms at different points to calculate the unknown impedance, Zx. The inductor is an often forgotten passive electrical elements used to design analog circuitry.

It is not that often one needs to measure inductance , but inductors are . Measure across the inductor with the same oscilloscope and look at the ringing frequency. Also the ESR (equivalent series resistance) can be measured with most of the presented methods. The most important of these are the series resistance and the self- inductance who is also connected in series .
